Andy Backhouse

A little bit about Andy.

Meet Andy. The North Yorkshire born 24 year-old DJ is a regular on La Bestia Radio, broadcasting every week in Mexico City from his garden shed.

Andy’s radio shows are a deep dive into the best new guitar noise, folk and electronica on the ground from London and across Europe, meeting new up and comers like Arlo Parks, Fontaines D.C., Everything Everything, Pi Ja Ma and Samantha Crain. 

Andy’s long-running connection with Mexico City began at university when he won Selector Radio’s presenter talent search competition, run by the British Council. The grand prize – to step off a plane in Mexico City. There, he began hosting shows on Ibero 90.9 FM, the country's biggest radio station for new music

The day after his graduation ceremony, Andy presented for the first time at the microphone on BBC 6 Music as Tom Robinson’s stand in.

On the road, Andy is a regular on the live circuit, DJing the summer festivals and compering onstage for Reading and Leeds.

Outside of radio duties, Andy’s curated a compilation series with the band Everything Everything, and curated a festival in Richmond Castle in Yorkshire. He hosts his own gig night, a monthly fixture at The Shacklewell Arms in London, welcoming DJ friends like Dave Okumu and Hot Chip.
